Magical Hat has this cool Egyptian-like statue in the background of most of the third world. If you’re not paying attention to your surroundings, it’s easy to get hit. I would like to acquire a copy of Magical Hat, though, so I can do some comparisons. Magical Hat’s Turbo Flight Adventure is based on the anime “Magical Hat.” In essence, the main character, Hat, falls into the underworld known as Devildom and has to defeat the evil king, Jiark. This might seem like it would make Magical Hat much harder, and in some ways it is, but the stages in DecapAttackare designed to be much more difficult to compensate for the extra damage you can absorb. In DecapAttack they’re located in different places. I know what you mean, though, platformers were my favorite genre when I was a kid. Breakable statues are everywhere in Decap Attack. These perverse peeper turtles need to go. @video_game_king: I think they're handled on a case-by-case basis, and these two seem different enough to keep separate. At the time I didn’t really like it that much. While I enjoyed a number of other Genesis games during that time (Shinobi 3, Jewel Master, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc), I was unable to enjoy this particular game because of that limitation. (Strangely, most of them are labeled with question marks in Magical Hat, while they all have arrows in DecapAttack.). The kneejerk reaction of many gamers is that the original Japanese version is usually superior than whatever altered version the overseas audience gets, but that’s not always true. In Magical Hat the bad guy is named Jiark, but is known as Max D. Cap. The pre-level screen in Magical Hat only shows an animation of Hat running, with the number of lives remaining. All they would have needed to do was change the sprite and tweak a few other elements. Psycho Fox is a much-improved second attempt with a stronger protagonist who doesn’t move like a jackass. There are extra graphical flourishes in DecapAttack, though, like the bones that are tossed up from the ground when you kill a bad guy. Magical Hat also has an extra sub-boss battle against these guys, Kowaru and Dogoo, from the anime. Here’s another case where DecapAttack is more difficult – right near the end of the stage is this series of arrow bouncing blocks, which you need to scale before you can go forward. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Magical Hat sounds like it might be more your bag and I don’t blame you. The difficulty balancing is largely where the games diverge. For example, in DecapAttack you can immediately hop into this body of water at the beginning of stage 2-1. Y’all need to get on this if you haven’t already. Certain power-ups can extend this even longer. Pink gophers are the new alcohol-induced hallucination. The fifth level boss is a mole in DecapAttack, and a lizard in Magical Hat. He’s just an evil genie in Magical Hat. This is the beginning of each stage. There’s no time limit, so exploration is encouraged and occasionally necessary. I’m not quite sure how to explain this discrepancy. Also returning are the strange bounding flagpoles, though they don’t serve much use beyond granting extra lives in Magical Hat and restoring health in DecapAttack. In Decap Attack, you have a life bar, but enemies are more aggressive. For most games, you hold down the “Mode” button while booting them up, but for some reason, Decap Attack doesn’t play along. I’m glad you liked it so much though – it bodes well for when I eventually try Magical Hat. The boss is really cool in DecapAttack, which is a yeti that shows off some impressive sprite manipulation. In this game you take on the role of Chuck D. Head, a mummy-like creature with its head built into its chest, the creation of the crazy doctor Frank N. Stein. Something you didn’t mention that’s worth noting: this game is absolutely incompatible with any 6-button Genesis controllers. RELEASE DATE: 12/15/90 (JP – Magical Hat…), 10/91 (US – Decap Attack), 11/91 (EU – Decap Attack). The game’s still incredibly difficult, but it’s playable, unlike Kid Kool. Would you rather stumble around in quirky, colorful anime settings, or hobble through a series of dark, dreary worlds?
